English and Russian Visual Military Dictionary

The English & Russian Visual Dictionary for Military Applications is for use by multinational military units in a tactical environment. This series of visual dictionaries is designed to fill a niche within international military operations. They are designed for Special Operations Forces (SOF), Military Training Teams (MTT), (Long Range) Combat Patrols, UN missions, and Joint Operations where a multitude of militaries from a wide range of national and cultural backgrounds have to operate under one unified command. Many times these various units have neither trained together nor do they have a common doctrine let alone a common vocabulary. Most of the time only a small fraction of the Soldiers in any unit speak a foreign language. Our dictionaries are based on NATO doctrine and verbiage and can aid the user(s) in learning each other’s jargon and military terminologies. The terms and symbols used are in compliance with U.S. Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1-02, Terms and Military Symbols and STANAG APP-6(C), NATO Joint Military Symbology. There are other dictionaries available, with a larger amount of vocabulary; however, they contain an excessive amount of information, more than what is necessary to complete the mission. Most of the other dictionaries are too large to carry around and require extra time and effort to find the right words. Unlike some electronic translation aids, our dictionaries do not break easily, need no batteries, and require no internet connection. Under combat conditions time is of the essence and if the words don’t come to mind, a picture is worth a thousand words. The English & Russian Visual Military Dictionary is small enough to fit into any uniform pocket which is a tremendous benefit to the Soldier who has to carry enough equipment as it is. These dictionaries give the Soldier the most commonly used words, phrases, and diagrams; just enough to plan and execute a mission.

The most common uses for our dictionaries are:

  • Identification of tactical symbols and maneuver control graphics

  • Identification of commonly used weapons, equipment and their major parts

  • Use as a “pointie talkie”
