Let’s Be Clear
Whether you are an accomplished world traveler, an international businessman, or a Soldier on a multinational mission, this powerful pocketbook will give you the most essential tools necessary to communicate with your counterparts. Let’s be clear provides unique insights into culturally specific communication. One can learn a foreign language to perfection and still have problems communicating effectively when abroad. The aspect mostly forgotten and not taught in conventional classrooms is non-verbal communication. A quick hand gesture, a nod with the head, a barely audible sound, or something as simple as using the wrong hand to greet someone can make all the difference in the world when trying to convey a message. This pocketbook will fill the gap between the spoken language and the intended meaning.
You may be a business man from the United States meeting a business partner from an African nation somewhere in central Europe, or you may be a Soldier from the U.S. Army on a multinational peacekeeping mission somewhere in Africa together with partner nations from Europe. This pocketbook can help you in your non-verbal communication and aid you in building rapport. It shows your counterparts that you are not only interested in communicating with them, but you want to truly understand them and their respective culture. You can use this pocketbook to teach each other some of the lesser known aspects of each other’s culture and thereby forge new friendships.
Since some of the gestures include sounds or utterances, we made an attempt to describe them as best as possible; however, just to be as unambiguous as possible, we included a new feature in this pocketbook. Gestures with sounds have a scannable QR code on the page. If you have a WIFI or data connection with your smartphone you can listen to the sounds and utterances as well as read them and look at the picture/illustration.
Unfortunately it is impossible to include all gestures, customs, or cultural norms found in Africa, central Europe, or North America. The variations and nuances found within a population will not permit such an undertaking. This pocketbook is an attempt to illustrate the most common gestures, customs, and cultural norms and will give the reader a solid foundation for his/her travels and interactions abroad.
The most common uses for this pocketbook are:
-
Understanding body, facial, and hand gestures
-
Understanding handwriting (letters and numbers)
